Michelle Branch and Maren Morris have teamed up for a new version of Branch’s early-2000s hit “Goodbye to You,” released along with a nostalgic video that leans into the song’s Y2K-era roots. The collaboration was first previewed after Branch unexpectedly joined Morris onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Aug. 15 during a concert marking the 10th anniversary of Morris’ debut album, Hero. The two performed “Goodbye to You” together, giving fans their first glimpse of the reimagined recording.
The accompanying video continues the early-2000s theme, incorporating a prom setting and a nod to MTV’s Laguna Beach, with reality TV star Kristin Cavallari appearing in the visual. Branch teased the collaboration earlier this month with a short video in which she asked, “Will you go to prom with me?”
Branch originally wrote “Goodbye to You” as a teenager and recorded an acoustic version for her independent album Broken Bracelet before re-recording it for her 2001 major-label debut, The Spirit Room. The song was released as a single in 2002 and reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became closely associated with early-2000s television after appearing in programs including Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Laguna Beach.
The new recording will appear on Branch’s forthcoming Everywhere and Back Again EP, due Nov. 6 through BMG. The eight-track project revisits material from across her career with new collaborators and follows the previously released “The Game of Love,” a new version of the New Radicals song featuring Branch. Branch is also on the road in support of the new EP on her Everywhere and Back Again tour; for details head HERE.
